Among the additives banned by the Certified Organic Industry are hydrogenated fat, aspartame (artificial sweetener) and monosodium glutamate.
- You'll avoid harmful pesticides. Over 400 chemical pesticides are routinely used in conventional farming and residues are often present in non-organic food. High levels of pesticide residues have even been found in non-organic baby food spinach, apples, bread, dried fruit and chips.
- Reliance on drugs removed. In Australia, there is growning concern about the high use of steroids and antibiotics on farm animals and the possible effects on human health. The Certified Organic standards prohibit the use of growth hormones and the routine use of antibiotics that would otherwise be absorbed by humans.
- Highest standards. Certified Organic food comes from trusted sources. Certified Organic farms and Certified Organic processors are inspected at least once a year, ensuring that all standards and guidelines are strictly adhered to.
- No hidden taxpayer costs. Every year the Australian Government spends millions of taxpayers dollars on problems caused by desalination, soil erosion and polluted waterways. Organic farmers employ practices that ensure these problems are virtually non-existent.
- No genetically modofied crops allowed. Irradiated and Genetically Modified crops and ingredients are not allowed under Certified Organic standards.
- Care for animals. Animal welfare is taken very seriously under Certified Organic standards. Animals range freely on Certified Organic pastures, eat Certified Organic feeds and are free of growth hormones and antibiotics.
